Year-to-date (past one-year returns) global market data as on 31Mar2022 are presented below:
Table 2: (please click on the image to view better)
As can be seen from Table 2 above, Hang Seng index lost 23 per cent in the past one year due to plunge in Chinese Technology stock prices. S&P 500 and Nifty 50 are in positive territory in the past one year.
Both the WTI and Brent crude oil are up about 70 per cent in the past one year, whereas Bitcoin is down 23 per cent in the same period. The US dollar index rose by 5.5 per cent.
India 10-year government bond yield surged by 66 basis points; whereas the US 10-year Treasury yield was up by 60 basis points.
Overall, sovereign bond yields have been surging, commodity prices are roaring whereas stock indices are struggling to move up--while the inflationary expectations continue to grow higher and higher. It is expected that the volatility in stocks will continue unless there is a satisfactory solution to Russian-Ukraine war and the supply chain bottlenecks are eased.
