BSE Broad and Sector Indices Market Cap 31Dec2021 - vrk100 - 02Jan2022

BSE Broad and Sector Indices Market Cap 31Dec2021

(A new blog post is available here with an update of the information as of 31Mar2022)

This is an update of my earlier blog published in October 2021. Without any fuss, let me present the data here showing how the market capitalisations of broad and sector indices of BSE Limited have performed during the calendar year 2021.

The following image shows the market capitalisation of various BSE Broad indices and sector indices. For example, S&P BSE Sensex's market cap is Rs 116.61 lakh crore, representing 43.8 per cent of the total market cap of all BSE companies as on 31Dec2021.

The same was 48.8 per cent (see Table 2 below) of total BSE market cap as on 31Dec2020--the reason for the decline in Sensex share during 2021 are: 1) addition of new initial public offerings (IPOs) like, Zomato, Nykaa, Paytm, Policybazaar and other large new issues that got listed during calendar year 2021; and 2) BSE Midcap and Small cap indices delivered superior returns compared to Sensex during 2021.

BSE 500 index's market cap as on 31Dec2021 is Rs 242.66 lakh crore, representing 91.2 per cent of the total BSE market cap. The chart shows the valuation measures (price-earning, price-book ratios and dividend yields) of the BSE indices also.

Of the sector indices, BSE Finance index has the biggest representation with the index having 20.7 per cent of total market cap; much ahead of BSE TECK and BSE Info Tech--but in the past one year, BSE Finance's share in total market cap has come down (see Table 2 below) while those of BSE TECK and BSE Info Tech have risen considerably.

Table 2: BSE Broad and Sector Market caps - One-year change in 2021 >

The above image shows the comparison of increase in market caps of BSE broad and sector indices between 31Dec2020 and 31Dec2021. During 2021, the biggest percentage increase in market cap is from BSE Utilities (not shown here) with a growth of 104 per cent; followed by BSE Basic Materials at 64.4 per cent rise and BSE Metal (not shown in the below graph) at 58.6 per cent.

Small cap and mid cap indices delivered highest percentage growth in their market caps during 2021. In sector indices, auto, banking and healthcare have disappointed investors with their tepid returns.

The total market cap of all BSE listed companies grew from Rs 188 lakh crore to Rs 266 lakh crore, showing a growth of 41.5 per cent in 2021. All the data presented in the above two tables are on full market capitalisation basis.
